A Forever HatMar 14, 2013
By William A. Scott
"William A Scott"
I purchased my Akubra "Snowy River" from a little store in Wagga Wagga, NSW, Australia back in 1984. I carried this hat back to the U.S. on my lap so it wouldn't get damaged in the overhead bins. I have used this hat for most hunting and fishing outings ever since. I've had it cleaned and re-blocked several times over this past 29 years, and have always been very happy with its high-quality construction and durability. Believe me, it's been stepped on by my horse, blown off my head into the lake, and soaked right through in Oregon's famous rainy Willamette Valley. I have sweated up so bad it left salt marks, but a little clean-up, and it was good to go. I have NEVER regretted spending the extra money to purchase my Akubra. I hardly ever give 5-stars in my reviews on Amazon. But,this high-quality, Australian-made hat deserves it, and I have 29 years of experience with it to prove it.

Great hat, great serviceDec 04, 2011
This was the 3rd Snowy River hat we've purchased over the years - worn every day in all kinds of weather, never lets us down in terms of style and function. (Last one was stolen off the train). Del Monico (vendor) delivered earlier than expected, and packaged with extraordinary care!

More Than Just LooksJul 28, 2013
I grew up watching the Snowy River movies and always admired the hat of the main character. I am currently a college student majoring in geology who invested in this hat as a means to keep myself cool and my face shaded during field work. I bought the hat just before heading to field camp. As of this review the hat endured quite a range of conditions from glaring sun and extreme heat in Moab, UT to light snow and rain in the Colorado Rockies.
Size: Like several other reviewers I found that the hats tend to fit small. My head falls between the two smallest sizes. I opted for the smaller size at first but had to return it because it was too small. The next size larger fit like a glove.
Material and Feel: The hat was quite stiff, more than initially expected. After six weeks of wear in the outdoors this has not changed much. I now appreciate the stiffness although it has become slightly more malleable. The material has a nice feel to it but I don't have enough experience to compare it with other materials of the same sort.
General Performance: The hat met all expectations for performance that I had. The brim is wide enough to keep your neck and face in the shade for most of the day. Due to its stiffness and wide brim the hat has a tendency to catch the wind easily. If it does not fit snugly you may have troubles keeping the hat on your head in moderate-high wind. I only experienced light rain and snow but the hat did well in both these conditions and dried quickly afterwards. The hat was overall very functional out in the field
Problems: My main issue had to deal with how easily the hat would catch the wind. If the hat fell on the ground it readily trapped dust and sand on the outside. Caught dirt was difficult to brush off and would only come off given more time and wear without another drop.
Overall a great product. I have no regrets about my purchase and look forward continuing to wear the hat throughout my geology career out in the field.

Simply AWESOME!May 18, 2014

I bought this Akubra hat for my Aussie husband (we live in the U.S) and it looks terrific on him! Now he finally resembles his accent! hahaha This hat is incredibly well made and it is well worth the price I paid for it. The workmanship is impeccable! The hat is sturdy, smells awesome, and is a true Aussie Akubra. Considering how well this was made, I'm surprised it didn't cost us several hundred dollars! This is the best gift I've ever given him and he absolutely loves it! All his friends now want to buy an Akubra hat. It's very manly looking, and it makes my hubby look SO sexy! Every time he wears it outside the house he gets numerous compliments on it. Several people have wanted to try it on, but my hubby says they have to get their own! hahaha Honestly, I am extremely impressed with this company and with their Akubra hat selection. The hat arrived quickly and in perfect condition. We had asked them to send us some extra foam inserts just in case we needed to make the hat a wee bit smaller, and I'm glad we got them because we did end up using them to make the hat fit a bit tighter on my husband's head. He is so in love with his Akubra that he treats it as if it were made out of pure gold. If you want to get your man a hat that he'll love forever and that is constructed so perfectly it will most likely last forever as well, you can't go wrong with a genuine Akubra. I never saw my husband so happy as the day he opened this gift from me. The thing is, now I want one of my own! These hats are really awesome!!

Akubras can save your lifeNov 14, 2013
I have my second Akubra Snowy River. Bought both in Alice Springs. My first one had to be retired after it saved my life -- a deer came through the windshield of my Land Cruiser in Virginia, and my Akubra kept broken glass and deer parts out of my eyes so that I was able to safely stop the vehicle. However, my Akubra was drenched in deer blood and beyond cleaning. Fortunately I got back to The Alice and was able to buy Akubra #2 which is still doing very well. Akubra #2 is approaching 20 years of age.
