This is a wonderful hat--a REAL boater.Mar 14, 2011
By Milwaukee Mike
I've always had a soft spot for boater hats. Last summer, I puchased one from another retailer in a thinner, Pananma-style straw. While it looked okay when new, the Panama boater began to lose its stiffness and board-staight looks after only a couple of wearings. Disappointed, I began look for a "real" boater, preferably one at a decent price.
Delmonico's boater is the real deal, imported from Venice and made of four layers of straw for the perfect thick feel. Like any real boater, you could seriously brain somebody with this hat. The "floating" leather sweatband and the white cloth lining ensure that this boater will be comfortable for all day wear. Also, the ribbon is simply beautiful.
Bear in mind that the only differences between this hat and the one offered by Brooks Brothers are a label and about $70.
NOTE: When in doubt, go a size up. Unlike felt or flexible straw hats which flex to fit the shape of your head, there is no give in a proper boater. In my case, given that my head is (evidently) slightly longer and narrower than other people's heads of the same overall circumference, I had to return my initial purchase for a larger size.

Superb hatMay 06, 2013

Classic boater in every sense. Made in Italy, correctly stiff, beautiful band. The hat is well finished with a full lining and fits pretty true to size. The color of the straw is quite pale, not at all yellow and definitely not tan or brown (as the Brooks Brothers version is). Very slightly off-white, if anything. Exactly what a boater should be, nothing more, nothing less.
The hat was shipped promptly and got to me much more quickly than I was expecting. It is shipped double boxed and arrived in perfect condition.
Gorgeous! Heirloom quality! Why did I ever wait so long to buy one of these?!Apr 10, 2014

At the turn of the century and right through the 1930s it was a summer standard for well dressed men everywhere to don one of these straw "boaters".
Today, it’s definitely a unique hat that sets the wearer apart from the crowd typically seen wearing baseball caps!
Personally speaking, I would avoid wearing it with a wide striped shirt or bold striped jacket simply because the look harkens an image of a jazz musician or member of a Barber Shop Quartet…but hey, if you are cool with that then go with it!
It really looks best when worn with a summer suit or light colored blazer and for a more casual look…if worn with a white shirt with rolled sleeves and open collar.
I will wear mine both for style and to cover my head during the hot summer months.
These ‘boaters' are classy and they say something about the wearer. That is, they say that the wearer is self-confident as to who he is and secure in the image he projects to the world around him.

Truly excellent, and would be perfect with two small adjustments:
* The lining and sweatband are very flimsily attached, and show signs of wear after barely two months.
* It would cost the manufacturer next to nothing to back the sweatband with a little soft foam to ensure a perfect fit, as it is one must fiddle with padding.
Beautiful - a quality hat!May 15, 2012
I just wore one of these lovely DelMonico Boater Straw Hats in a theatrical production. It was provided as part of my costume, and now I want my own! I was struck with the quality of this stiff hat - what a joy to wear, and it always looked perfect.
