5Great Looking Hat!Aug 08, 2011
By R. Severin
This is my first Stetson Hat. It is great in quality and fit. The color is very retro, as is the style. Suits my desires just fine. I ordered one in Caribou, and am awaiting it's arrival. The seller, DelMonico Hatters has a good price, and free shipping, something lacking from other sellers. I am very pleased.

It's two years later, and this is, by far, my most favorite hat. I wear it more often than any of my other hats, including the other Stetson's. I wear it with a brown suede bomber jacket, and together, they make a great combination. 2013

5Best fedora dress hat.Jan 19, 2012

This is by far the best looking dress hat from Stetson.I wear it when I go to church, special party, with my suit & tie.I like the stetches around the hat,it just makes it elegant.A little pricey but its worth the $$$.It comes with a custom stetson box to keep your hat in good condition & from dust, when storing it.Stetson are Made In America and they've been around since 1865.Thats history, quality and experience.I've tried other brand and I choose Stetson.

4A good signFeb 05, 2013

Stetson is to be commended for their efforts in bringing a quality hat to the public, although the original "Stetson" company has not made their own hats for decades. The original "Whippet" of the mid-20th Century is an icon, highly desirable and coveted by hat collectors, despite the fact that it was definitely mid-range in quality. They went for about $10 back then, compared to a top-of-the-line Cavanagh that would have sold for $20. Multiply by 15 to get an idea of what those amount to in today's dollars.

You're going to pay a bundle for an original Whippet in top condition, but if you're willing to settle for a lightly used one, you can get it for less than the cost of a new one. You can pay well under $100 for a look-alike made by another manufacturer. I have a "Sheeler" from the 1940s that I paid $50 for as new old stock, and distinguishing it from a Whippet from the same period would be impossible without looking at the label. No mass-produced modern hat of any price will match the quality of a vintage hat - this is definitely one area where they don't make them like they used to. Bespoke hats are still available - I know a gentleman who will make you a custom hat in any style you desire, perfectly conformed to fit your cranium, as he says, "no matter how endowed or depleted you may be." Prices start at $1500. The manufacturing process, from raw materials to finished hat, requires no electricity, except for a light bulb to allow him to work at night. But even he can't reproduce the "Cavanagh edge" of the past, where the felt at the edge of the brim was worked back into itself during the manufacturing process. If you want that, you need an original.

Up through the mid-1960s, no self-respecting American male over the age of 18 went outdoors without a hat of some kind, usually a fur felt fedora like this one. It's said that when JFK was inaugurated without a hat, that began the demise of the hat as a necessary article of clothing. But the hat never really went away - baseball and cowboy hats have remained steadily popular. I'm encouraged by the profusion of cloth trilbies available nowadays in every department store, and their growing popularity with young people. I predict that the hat is on its way back. This offering by Stetson, despite the fact that it is about to be discontinued (again), is both a tribute to the past and a hope for the future.

This is my fourth Stetson hat I've owned and my favourite. Not only that, but the seller, DelMonico Hatters, are first rate - both helpful and informative. When there was a problem with the shipping, they promptly sent out another immediately. Highly recommended.
